“Hello?”

“…H-hey man.”

“Oh, hey. What’s up?”

“Nothing, just wanted to talk.”

“You call me at 2:30 in the morning because you just wanted to talk? Right. What’s really going on, dude?”

“I just…I just kinda want to let off some steam, ya know?”

“What’s up?”

“I-I… I’m not sure I can take anymore.”

“D-dude, what are you saying? Don’t talk like that.”

“S-sorry. I-I know it’s probably not fair of me to do this to you.”

“It’s okay man, really. Just kind of freaked me out a bit there is all.”

What are you doing?! Let him talk!!!

“Sorry. I shouldn’t have bothered you.”

Don’t say that!!

“It’s okay dude, really. Listen let’s talk about this tomorrow, alright?”

No…NO NO NO!!! Don’t let him hang up!!

“Y-yeah, yeah alright, man.”

NO!!! Keep him talking!!! Don’t end it there!!

“I’ll see you tomorrow, alright?”

No you won’t!! Stop him you idiot!! Do something!! Anything!!

“Yeah…right. See ya.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You shot up in bed, scared awake by the same nightmare that’s haunted you since your sophomore year of high school. You wiped the ice cold sweat off your face as you attempted to regain control of your breathing.
You grabbed your alarm clock from the nightstand and checked the time: 5:45. No use trying to go back to sleep just to get another rude awakening in 30 minutes. With a yawn and a stretch, you throw back the covers and drag yourself to the shower to start another day as a teacher.
MADDIE’S POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Another day, another torment. Even with Mr. _______ around, school life was still hard for Maddie. Even though Gilbert had stopped molesting her, she could tell he must have been spreading more rumors because the actions against her were becoming more and more hateful, especially from the girls. They were absolutely ruthless. Maddie was afraid to even go to the bathroom unless the entire restroom was completely empty first. Her locker always had notes stuck in it full of names like “slut” and “whore”, but now they were all threats to hurt or kill her. Every day she was more and more terrified to arrive at school.

As she cleaned the latest set of death threats out of her locker, she saw Mr._______ walking down the hall on his way to the classroom. But he wasn't the perky, handsome man he usually was; he had bags under his eyes, his hair looked more unkempt than usual, his skin seemed pale, and his eyes were dull. He carried a disorganized mess of folders and papers and whatnot under one arm and in his other hand he held a Venti size Starbucks cup. In short, the man looked like a tired, exhausted mess.

“M-Mr._______?” Maddie attempted as he walked by. But he didn't even acknowledge her, which hurt her a bit. “Mr._______?” she called again. This time the man stopped and turned to look at her.

“O-Oh. Morning Madeline” he said, stifling a yawn.

“Are you alright?” Maddie asked “I had to try twice to get your attention. I mean, if it were any other teacher it wouldn't be anything new, but not you.”

“Hm? Oh, sorry Madeline” he said apologetically, “I'm just a little out of it this morning.”

“And that's another thing” Maddie continued, “You're calling me Madeline instead of Maddie. You always call people by their nicknames unless something's bothering you.”

The male's eyes widened a bit before he closed them and chuckled. “You know me too well, Maddie, you know that?”

“Is something wrong, Mr. _______?” Maddie asked.

“I'm fine, I promise you” he replied, “I'll be my usual self before first period. I just had a rough night is all.”

“Well, okay. If you say so” she said.

YOUR POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You didn't like lying through your teeth like that, but Maddie had it so hard already you thought it would be better not to burden her with your own issues. Moreover, if you actually told her what the issue was, you were afraid you'd put her on suicide watch.
You finally managed to get to your classroom and chugged down the rest of your coffee in a desperate attempt to wake up before the students arrived. You tossed the empty cup in the trash and tried to organize yourself. While you were dragging yourself out of the car you had gotten all your papers mixed up and now the graded homework from your morning classes was all mixed together.
You had gotten the last paper back into place just as the first bell sounded. You quickly tried to pat down your hair that had somehow wound up more disastrous than usual despite showering this morning. You gave your coffee-fueled lectures straight through until lunch break came around.
As if on cue, Maddie walked in the door and took her regular seat on the other side of the desk. You unpacked our lunches and you were about to start your usual talk when Maddie surprised you by speaking first.
“Mr. _______, are you feeling better?” she asked.
You couldn't help but stare for a moment. Usually she was so reserved, even during these private chats. It would take her some time to warm up before she allowed herself to totally open up. You finally put on a smile and answered. “Yes, I'm much more awake now, thanks.”
“What had you so beat up this morning?”
“Oh, nothing. Just, uh, lost some sleep while...grading papers. Y'know, typical teacher stuff?” you lied through your teeth. “I have to be able to return a hundred fifty papers to my students.”
“Oh, okay.” She hung her head slightly. “I'm sorry if I'm prying too deep into your life, I just got a little worried seeing you so exhausted and drained.”
“No no, it's fine!” you grinned. “To tell you the truth, it's nice to have someone checking up on me every once in a while. I haven't made any real friends since I moved here for work; only professional relationships, no one I can talk with or hang out with on Saturdays.”
Maddie giggled. “I don't normally think of teachers having social lives.”
“Hey! I'm only twenty, remember?!” You both laughed at the exchange. But it was short lived. Maddie frowned and gazed at you seriously.
“Mr._______, is that true?”
“Yeah it's true” you smiled. “I told you guys I was twenty on the first day of class, remember?”
“No, not that” she gulped nervously. “I-I-I mean a-about yu...n-not having friends...”
“O-oh” your cheeks turned a slight pink from embarrassment. “Yeah. I-I mean of course I have friends, I just had to leave them behind when I moved. We haven't spoken for a while.”
“Um...uh...I...uh...”she was desperately trying to say something. You were afraid you had just ruined the moment.
“Look, Maddie, I'm sorry if I made things awkward. Let's just forget--”
“I'll be... you friend...” she suddenly said. “I-I-I mean, if t-that's okay?”
You were taken aback by this. You could tell though that she was beginning to show courage and beginning to branch out. You smiled warmly. “Oh course. You'll be my first friend here.” You held out you pinky finger for her to shake, but she only stared at your hand. “Oh...” you grimaced, “Do...do people not do 'pinky swears' anymore...?”
“Not since I was in fifth grade!” Maddie burst out laughing. She snorted a bit and tried to contain herself by clasping her hands over her mouth. When she finally managed to stop laughing, she said “But sure!” She wrapped her pinky around yours. “Best friends; pinky swear.”
You smiled. “Pinky swear.”
It's out! Took so much longer than it should have! I'm a horrible person! Enjoy!
